Taking a GLP-1 Medication? Here's What It Could Mean for Your Oral Health

Medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Zepbound® have helped many people successfully lose weight and improve their overall health. While these medications can have tremendous benefits, many patients don't realize they can also have effects inside the mouth.

At Connected Smile Solutions, we believe your oral health is closely connected to your overall health, so it's important to understand what to watch for if you're taking a GLP-1 medication.

Dry Mouth

One of the most common side effects is decreased saliva production.

Saliva plays a critical role in protecting your teeth by:

  • Neutralizing acids
  • Washing away food particles
  • Helping prevent cavities
  • Protecting against gum disease

When your mouth is dry, your risk for tooth decay and bad breath increases.

Acid Reflux and Vomiting

Some GLP-1 medications can cause nausea or vomiting, particularly when first starting treatment or increasing the dosage.

Stomach acid is extremely damaging to tooth enamel.

If you vomit:

  • Do not brush immediately afterward.
  • Rinse with water or water mixed with a small amount of baking soda.
  • Wait about 30 minutes before brushing to avoid brushing softened enamel away.

Changes in Eating Habits

Many patients eat smaller meals more frequently while taking these medications.

While eating less can be beneficial, frequent snacking—even on healthy foods—can expose your teeth to acids throughout the day. Try to limit grazing and drink water between meals whenever possible.

Increased Risk of Cavities

When dry mouth combines with more frequent eating, the chance of developing cavities can increase.

Good home care becomes even more important:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss every day.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Consider products designed to relieve dry mouth if recommended by your dentist.
